Wright State lost Horizon League Player of the Year Chelsea Welch to graduation, but returns three starters — Emily Vogelpohl, Mackenzie Taylor and Symone Simmons — from a team that finished 23-11 and reached the Horizon League tournament title game.
Vogelpohl (10.8 points per game, 2.8 steals per game) was voted to the league’s preseason first team.
Green Bay, which has won 20 straight regular-season championships, received 28 of 29 first-place votes. IUPUI’s Macee Williams was named the league’s preseason player of the year.
Youngstown State, which received the other first-place vote, was fourth in voting, followed by Milwaukee, Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy and UIC.
Joining Vogelpohl and Williams on the first team are Green Bay’s Jen Wellnitz, NKU’s Molly Glick and Youngstown State’s Sarah Cash.
The second team features Tamya Sims of IUPUI, Taylor Jones of Oakland, Brittany Byrd and Taylor Toney of UIC and Chelsea Olson of Youngstown State.
Wright State hosts Marian in an exhibition game Oct. 27 at the Nutter Center. The Raiders open the regular season Nov. 6 at Cal State University-Bakersfield.
