Extreme cold today; temps return to near normal this weekend

Extreme conditions continue today with wind chills as low as 20 degrees below zero for some as the region experiences the coldest weather of the season.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 a.m. The high will be near 19 degrees with a wind chill value of minus 17 possible, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

The dangerous cold could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Anyone who must go outdoors should dress in layers, including a hat, face mask and gloves. Also, keep pets inside as much as possible.

According to Kettering Health, symptoms of frostbite include:

  • Redness or pain in any skin area
  • Skin feeling unusually firm or waxy
  • Numbness

Signs of hypothermia include:

  • Shivering
  • Exhaustion or drowsiness
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Fumbling hands
  • Slurred speech
  • Bright red, cold skin and low energy

If your temperature drops below 95 degrees, seek medical attention immediately.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy with an overnight low around 13 degrees.

Thursday will be mostly cloudy with the high temperature pushing closer to freezing, near 29 degrees. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy with an overnight low around 10 degrees.

Skies will be partly sunny Friday with a high near 24 degrees. Friday night will be partly cloudy with an overnight low around 12 degrees.

Saturday will be partly sunny with a high above freezing, near 36 degrees. Saturday night will be mostly cloudy with an overnight low around 27 degrees.
