Thunderstorms this afternoon and overnight could be strong to severe, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington., Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats, NWS meteorologists said. Heavy rain could result in localized flooding.
It also will be hot and humid today, but a Heat Advisory initially in effect from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today for much of the region has been canceled.

Highs today initially were expected to push up into the low 90s, but rain early in the day resulted in a revision of a high in the mid to upper 80s.
Overnight, lows will stay warm, only falling to around 75 degrees.
The NWS predicted a chance of rain and thunderstorms through the end of the work week, with storms and showers becoming likely each afternoon.
The storms are expected to be accompanied by hot temperatures – on Wednesday, temperatures are expected to reach near 93 degrees with a heat index value around 101 degrees, while on Thursday highs will be around 90 degrees.
Nights will also be warm, with a low around 72 degrees on Wednesday and around 71 degrees on Thursday.
The NWS said that a cold front, accompanied by more thunderstorms, may drop through the area late Friday into Saturday, followed by cooler, drier air for a weekend with more seasonally warm temperatures.
