Rain this morning ahead of extreme cold to start work week

This morning will be rainy, changing to a chance of rain and snow in the early afternoon before trailing off, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Otherwise, today will be mostly cloudy and breezy, with highs around 39 degrees.

Tonight will be cloudy, breezy and cold, with lows around 18 degrees.

Sunday will be colder, with highs only around 23 degrees and a slight chance of snow throughout the day.

Sunday night will be breezy and bitterly cold, with lows around zero degrees and winds making it feel as cold as minus 15 to minus 25 degrees.

There is an Extreme Cold Watch in effect starting at around 1 a.m. on Monday morning and continuing until around 10 a.m. on Wednesday, issued by the NWS. During that time, the NWS predicted dangerously cold temperatures, which could rupture water pipes.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be sunny but very cold, with highs only around 11 degrees, followed by a partly cloudy night with lows again falling to around zero degrees.

The NWS didn’t predict much wind Monday night, but light winds could still make it feel as cold as minus eight degrees.
