Today will be sunny and cold before a winter storm arrives in the area on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until midnight on Monday for Greene, Montgomery, Preble, Warren and Butler counties.

There will be a Winter Storm Watch for the rest of the area from 7 a.m. Sunday through midnight on Monday night.

Between Sunday morning and Monday night, the NWS expects heavy snow, with total accumulations between 5 and 9 inches.

Some more southern counties, such as Butler and Warren counties, could see more of a wintry mix, which will cause less snow accumulation but more ice.

The agency urged drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling, and that they should expect slippery roads. It also said to be careful on the first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks and driveways because those surfaces could be icy.

Snow is likely to start falling in the afternoon and continue through Sunday night, with breezy winds starting up around midnight.

Highs will be around 27 degrees on Sunday, dipping a little to around 22 degrees overnight.

On Monday, the NWS predicted snow will be likely in the morning, with a chance of snow in the afternoon that will come to an end that evening. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy and breezy during the day, with the winds dying down overnight.

Highs will be around 29 degrees, and lows will be around 12 degrees.
