Chappelle has been hosting this ongoing series of comedy events since June 6 at the Wirrig Pavilion in Yellow Springs. Tickets for these events pop up randomly and are typically sold out within minutes. The only performer that is announced ahead of time is Chappelle himself. The rest of the lineup for the show is a surprise, although comedians Michelle Wolf and Donnell Rawlings have been performing at most of the shows.
These events have an extremely limited capacity to ensure the safety of all attendees. Doors open at 8 p.m. No alcohol will be sold or permitted on the premises. Food will be available from a local food truck vendor. No cell phones are allowed into the event. If you bring yours, you’ll be asked to place it in a locked pouch until the event is over.
Additionally, this is an outdoor event so guests are encouraged to dress comfortably. Due to safety concerns, women with high-heeled shoes will not be admitted. Chairs are provided, although, in my experience, they can feel quite hard after being seated for so long, so bringing a cushion or sweater to sit on might help, particularly for pregnant women.
For those who have not attended these events, there are some important things to know: There is no box office on site; tickets can only be purchased online and are non-transferrable. Tickets are sold in pairs only, so only the ticket purchaser and guest will be admitted. The purchaser’s ID and credit card must match the name on the account when checked upon parking. Parking is included in the ticket price. All sales are final, no refunds. It’s an 18+ event.
Upon entry, all attendees will have their temperature checked and are asked to sanitize their hands. Custom Chappelle masks with N95 filters are given to all who attend, although you can wear your own mask if you choose to. Masks must be worn at all times.
After attending a couple of these events, I advise bringing some sort of long sleeve shirt or light sweater. The shows typically start at 9 p.m. and last until after midnight, so it can get cool in the evening. You can also use the shirt or sweater to save your seat if you go to get food or use the bathroom. I encourage you to bring your own water and hand sanitizer.
