Abner, who is originally from Cleveland, but moved to Cincinnati in the late 1980s, hosted a brunch group and supper club in the Queen City via Meetup, a social networking site that helps people find and build local communities.
She moved to Centerville in October 2023 and last year, married her husband, Bob, who has lived in the area for over 30 years.
“I feel like the town is so big and there’s so many great places to go eat, but nobody knows about them,” Abner said. “My husband and I started about four or five months ago mystery date night. We wouldn’t tell each other where we were going and we would pick a spot and go somewhere where neither of us has ever been.”
After finding more and more places they have never been before, she knew she wanted to create a group to go explore these establishments.
“After COVID ... a lot of people really started hibernating and not going out as much. If nothing else, I think this will spark an interest in people to socialize,” Abner said.
The first event is 5-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Chappys Social House, located at 7880 Washington Village Dr. in Washington Twp.
The plan is to have those in attendance choose a group name, order drinks and/or food on separate checks, socialize and contribute $1-$5 for a group tip.
“I was a server forever,” Abner said. “I waited tables from the time I was 14 until I was in my late 40s, so just the thought that I could have someone walk out the door with a couple hundred bucks.”
The group tip will be presented to the server at 6 p.m.
Abner wants to create a community and be able to bless the servers with this group.
“I do feel that it brings me a lot of joy to bring people together,” Abner said.
Building this group is something she plans to do in her free time. Abner works as a client services director at ServiceMaster by Angler fulltime.
“I’m just really excited to bring everyone together and it was neat to see such an interest,” Abner said. “I think it does show since Covid, we’re just looking for community, looking to meet new people.”
