Here are some fun and interesting facts we have taught or family about Black History Month:
- February was chosen as Black History Month because the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln both fall in February.
- Are you a potato chip lover? If so then you have George Crum to thank. George was an African American chef that invented the potato chip in 1853.
- Here’s a fun fact for Dayton aviation lovers. Bessie Coleman was the first woman to hold a pilot license. She was denied entry in the United States to flying school but taught herself French and moved to France where she later earned her pilot license.
- Madam C.J. Walker was the first American woman to become a self-made millionaire. Walker was born to parents who lived in slavery and she later grew up to create a line of hair care products for women like her. If your children are old enough check out the Netflix miniseries Self Made about the life of Madam C.J. Walker.
- Who doesn’t love a good super soaker water fight in the summer? We all have Lonnie Green, a Black American aerospace engineer for NASA, to thank for inventing this popular toy.
