Gem City Vet opens on Saturday, August 28.

Furry patients will soon have access to low-cost veterinary services thanks to the passion of Gem City Kitties.

The nonprofit partner of the Gem City Catfé, Gem City Kitties has announced Aug. 28 as the opening date for the Gem City Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Lindsey Vansandt from the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden is heading the clinic that will be located at 5941 Wolf Creek Pike in Trotwood.

“When I heard about what Gem City Kitties was hoping to accomplish with their veterinary clinic, I was happy to join them in their mission,” Vansandt said. “I look forward to meeting pet owners in this community and helping keep Dayton pets happy and healthy.”

To start, the clinic will offer low-cost wellness services one weekend per month, then later expand to include more hours, services and programs. The 2021 weekend schedule is tentatively Aug. 28 and 29, Sept. 11 or Sept. 18 (TBD), Oct. 2 and 3, Nov. 6 and 7, and Dec. 4, 5 and 18.

The clinic’s schedule of one weekend per month could be expanded in the future.

Wellness services that will be offered upon opening include exams, vaccines, preventatives for heartworm, fleas and ticks, testing for heartworm and “FeLV/FIV,” microchips and administering of treatment and medication for common medical issues such as: ear infections, ear mites and mange. As the clinic grows, the intent is to add spay and neuter services.

“We’ve been dreaming of this day for a long time and can’t wait to get our first patients in the door of Gem City Vet,” said Karin Gudal, Executive Director of Gem City Kitties and Founder of Gem City Catfé. “We believe people should be able to enjoy having pets, however the high cost of veterinary care is often a barrier to pet ownership. It’s our hope that Gem City Vet makes it easier for families to give their pets the care they need and keep them in their homes.”

You can donate funds toward helping the clinic get equipment as well as support initial operations at www.gemcityvet.org.

Since opening in 2018, in partnership with the Gem City Catfé, Gem City Kitties has adopted over 740 cats to loving homes, educated thousands of Daytonians on best practices for cat care, and trained over 100 community members on how to help solve this problem at a local level, according to the clinic’s website.
